Primary vs. Backup Sump Pumps: Why You Need Both

The storm that floods your basement is usually the same storm that kills your power. Plan for both pumps before it happens.

What a Primary Pump Does

Your primary pump is the everyday workhorse: a submersible pump, usually 1/3 HP to 1 HP, sitting in the sump pit and cycling on whenever groundwater rises. It handles routine seepage, spring melt, and ordinary rainstorms without complaint, as long as it has power and a working float switch. For most homes, most of the time, the primary pump is the only thing standing between the water table and the finished basement.

The Problem: Storms and Outages Arrive Together

The conditions that put the most water into your sump pit — severe thunderstorms, high winds, saturated ground — are the same conditions most likely to knock out utility power. A primary pump without electricity is a paperweight, and it fails at the precise moment inflow is highest. Primary pumps also fail mechanically: float switches stick, motors burn out, and check valves jam, usually after years of reliable service lull you into ignoring the pit. A backup system covers both failure modes.

Two Kinds of Backup: Battery and Water-Powered

Battery backup pumps are secondary electric pumps powered by a deep-cycle battery, sized to run for hours during an outage. They work in any home but the battery needs periodic replacement and the system needs occasional testing. Water-powered backups use municipal water pressure to drive a venturi that pulls water from the pit — no battery, no moving motor, no electricity at all — but they require city water with adequate pressure and they consume water as they pump. Well-water homes can't use them; homes with municipal supply often can.

The Practical Setup

The standard belt-and-suspenders arrangement is a quality submersible primary pump, plus a battery or water-powered backup mounted slightly higher in the same pit so it only runs when the primary can't keep up or can't run at all.
