How a Water-Powered Backup Works

A water-powered backup pump is a venturi device plumbed into your home's municipal water line. When the pit's float rises — because the primary pump lost power or couldn't keep up — a valve opens and city water rushes through a nozzle, creating suction that pulls sump water up and out through the discharge. There is no motor, no battery, and nothing electrical in the pumping path at all. As long as municipal pressure holds, the pump keeps working, even through multi-day outages that would exhaust any battery.

The Requirements Are Non-Negotiable

These pumps only work on municipal water — a private well goes dry the moment the same outage kills your well pump, which defeats the entire purpose. Your supply also needs adequate pressure and flow; manufacturers publish minimum PSI requirements, and marginal pressure means marginal pumping. Installation typically requires a dedicated connection to your potable plumbing with backflow prevention (often an RPZ valve), which means a permit and a licensed plumber in many jurisdictions. Confirm all three before buying.

The Water Usage Tradeoff

The pump spends municipal water to move sump water — commonly on the order of one gallon of city water per one to two gallons of pit water removed, depending on pressure and model. In a long, wet outage that consumption shows up on your water bill, and in some municipalities it's a reason water-powered backups are restricted or prohibited outright. Check local code. For most homeowners the trade is acceptable: a modest water bill beats a flooded basement by several orders of magnitude.

Who Should Choose One

A water-powered backup makes sense if you have municipal water with solid pressure, local code allows it, and you want a backup that needs essentially zero maintenance between tests — no battery to replace every few years, no charger to fail.
